How to tell the gender of Rainbow fish
It can be confusing to know how to identify rainbowfish gender as they are generally quite similar in body shape and colouration, but if you know what to look for it can become quite easy. There are many species of rainbowfish from large geographical locations but they all follow similar rules for sexing them.
Colouration
Certain rainbowfish can be identified quite easily by colouration. Generally speaking this is true when they are between juvenile and adult size. The males will be much brighter in colouration than the females who are usually a less flamboyant version of the boys. However colouration is not the complete solution for sexing rainbow fish, because when juvenile or grown adults, rainbowfish colouration can be very similar between the sexes.
Using the dorsal fin
The dorsal fins are and excellent way of sexing rainbowfish. Male rainbowfish will have the first dorsal fin overlapping the second dorsal fin, whereas on the female rainbowfish, the dorsal fin will either not reach the second dorsal or just about touch it. This is generally true for all species of rainbowfish so is a good indicator of sex, although when juvenile or if the fish are of a poor quality, the fins may not be as well developed to allow this method of identification.
Other ways
Males will have a more pointed dorsal and anal fins compared to the females who have more rounded short fins. When adult male rainbowfish will be deeper bodied than the more sleek females.
