Atomic Energy Authority - 1954 | Movietone Moment | 12 February 2021

On this day in 1954, the Atomic Energy Authority was created to control the production and development of atomic energy in the UK. Here is a British Movietone report from 1960 showing the Windscale atomic plant being built. At Windscale in Cumberland, where an atomic reactor “blew up“, so to speak, in 1957, big things are happening. The new atom furnaces being built will be safer and far more efficient. Windscale’s new Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor, here being built for the Atomic Energy Authority, is expected to be in operation sometime next year. GV Windscale Atomic Plant. LS atomic reactor. MS men working on outside reactor. MS same. LAS reactor (2). MS crane jib through hole is side on reactor. HAS men working inside reactor. MS reactor. LAS same. LS reactor.
