Chad’s economy drives oil and agriculture. Oil constitutes the bulk of export earnings and government revenues. Gold, gum Arabic, sesame, cattle, and cotton are Chad’s primary non-oil exports. A majority of Chad’s population relies on subsistence farming and livestock rearing. Due to its distance from the sea and its largely desert climate, the country is sometimes referred to as the “Dead Heart of Africa“.
