The Stylistic Choice of Black Misinterpretation in Art | Our History

In this roundtable talk, poet, writer, and producer Demii Lee Walker speaks to Michael Chibueze (Instagram @_roiarts_) and Jasmin Jahmeelah (Instagram @) about common mistakes made by artists depicting Black people in their works, and their individual journeys and experiences as people of colour in the art space. Subscribe to Our History: The topic was sparked by a Twitter thread that gained traction on social media. It includes a few examples of the depictions, such as the omission of lighter palms when drawing the hands of Black people or giving characters bright pink lips, something that resembles the outdated racist practice of blackface. Chibueze and Jahmeelah’s art is also featured during the talk, giving viewers a chance to see their work.
