This animated 3-D flyby of Tropical Storm Malakas was created by radar data from the GPM core satellite. On Sept. 13 at 0111 UTC GPM’s instruments showed that Malakas contained exceptionally heavy rainfall at a rate of over 299 mm (11.8 inches) in the northeastern side of the storm where cloud tops were stretching to heights above 17 km (10.5 miles).
