How to Tie your Aikido / Judo / Karate Belt - 3 Methods - Very Detailed (w/ subtitles)
Here’s the direct links to each method:
First method (small knot): 1:08
Second method (secure knot): 3:24
Third method (double knot): 4:35
In our second “How To“ video, we will explain 3 different ways of tying the belt for Aikido, Judo, Karate or any other martial arts using a Judo type belt.
Those 3 methods are perfectly standard and can be used as you like in Judo, Karate, Aikido, Jujutsu, etc.
The first method presented is the one used by Seido’s founder Jordy.
With this method, you get a very small knot, very suitable if you wear a Hakama, but without, it might loosen during practice.
With the second method, you get a knot that sits tightly and that would be especially recommended for Judo, Karate, Jujutsu or Aikido, if you don’t wear a Hakama.
Finally, the third method is more something like your “last chance“ if your belt keeps loosening during practice, no matter what you do. It’s probably more suitable for Judo and Jujutsu than Aikido or Karate.
There is no “best“, “official“ or “standard“ method in any martial art (but some Koryu perhaps), so in general, you are free to use the one that suits you the best.
If your teacher recommends another technique or if you have your own (better) idea how to tie it, don’t hesitate to leave a comment and give us some insights !
In our first “How To“ video, we will explain 3 different ways of putting on and tying a Hakama for Aikido.
Those 3 methods could also be applied in some ways to Iaido, Kendo and of course, any Jujutsu-like art that uses a classic Judo type black belt.
Those methods are, however, not suitable for wearing a Hakama at a formal occasion.
The first method presented is the one used by Seido’s founder Jordy. With this method, the Hakama should stay in place. The second method, is the most common in Aikido. The third one is very less common but is very likely the best method, if your Hakama doesn’t stay in place during practice when using the other two methods.
There is no “best“, “official“ or “standard“ method in Aikido (unless your group/dojo has its own rule of course), so we are just presenting those methods as tips to help you find a way to tie your Hakama.
If your teacher recommends another technique or if you have your own (better) idea how to do it, don’t hesitate to leave a comment and give us some insights !
