History of Sigtuna – where Sweden begins

Once upon a time … around 970 AD, King Erik the Victorious looked out at the surroundings and pointed out the location where Sigtuna town would be built – a new era in the Swedish history was about to begin. Today we can go back in time and visit medieval churches, ruins, castles and rune stones from the Viking Area. Right from the start there were a multitude of languages, cultures and influences in Sigtuna. In the 11th century about 1000 people lived in the town. Archaeological findings show the trade of exotic goods from Byzantium, Russia, Poland and Ukraine. Everything indicates that there were many international permanent residents who contributed their knowledge, skills and contacts. Today, they are all part of the Swedish history!
