I felt like I had to do something afterwards. Whether that was tapping my foot, head banging to the chorus or pretending I was teen me moshing at a live gig again. I realised the most important part of the music video had to be reflecting the pace and energy of the song. That, while you were sucked into the performance during the video, afterwards you would want to get away from your computer and start dancing. I think that’s what I love about live music. And I wanted to emulate via a video that energy. How, in one room, we can all get sucked into one moment in time and somehow (supernaturally) we all move and act as one. As far as the concept itself, that came with this being my first music video as a director. I knew that I needed to do something that was comforting, nostalgic and fun. So, naturally, that meant a 90’s, Goosebumps inspired horror concept. It felt on brand for the rock aspect of the track as well as the narrative. Not only that, but being able to work with Blink Vivid as well as a condensed version of my usual team was a dream come true and I couldn’t have done it without their hard work, their imagination and their ability to be playful with their skillset. Influencer Killed the Rock Star Lyrics You’re getting lost in a YouTube hole. A talking head’s bidding for your soul. And it’s a hashtag feedback loop with a soundtrack. You’re begging to see what unfolds. All they want is for you to pay, pay, pay. Doesn’t matter what they’ve got to say, say, say. But will you ever learn? Throw away your Fender guitar, Now this is who you are, propping up the ego bar! In the bin with the repertoire, To trade in the bizarre: influencer killed the rock star! They sell a smile with an inspo quote. Repost a para full of some vague hope. Well this is freebase clickbait, soon they’re gonna tax hate, ‘Cos it’s about the banknotes. Your videos are edited to shimmer, pop, and shine; You are you own protagonist, the author and the rhyme; To live to tell the tale, and the tale is the life; You’ve trademarked your name, and you soul’s in copyright! In the fire with your music sheets, It’s what you want to be: Internet personality! To the dogs with the rock n roll dream, It’s crazy now to see: theoretician of conspiracy! And all the other things of cultural and intellectual value. Forget music, art, the prospect of dialogical engagement with another. This is your life now.
