What did the British Empire ever do for Africa?

There is a very modern idea that British colonialism was an enterprise undertaken entirely for the benefit of the people of Britain. Nothing could be further from the truth, as the life and death of the man who became known as Gordon of Khartoum clearly illustrates. The struggle against slavery in East Africa was a wholly unselfish and altruistic endeavour.
