A volcano has begun to erupt in Iceland! Lava is approaching the city!

A volcanic eruption began on the Icelandic Reykjanes Peninsula on Monday evening. It was preceded by several weeks of earthquakes and tremors. The eruption began at 22:17 approximately 4 km northeast of Grindavik. About 4,000 people were evacuated last month from this fishing town threatened by a lava flow. The area remains closed and walking in the area is prohibited. Despite this, Iceland’s main international airport, which is located 20 km from the eruption site, remains open. Volcanologists fear that pollution from the volcano could reach the capital Reykjavik, although this had not happened as of Wednesday morning. There are no reports of casualties.
