Angered by defeat, the retreating German’s set fire to buildings on their way out as part of their ’Scorched Earth’ policy in which they destroyed anything of financial or cultural value. Refugees are seen returning to Kiev and joyously being reunited with their families, almost oblivious to the city in ruins around them.
