This 1963 TV documentary, narrated by Detroit sportscaster Van Patrick, highlights a unique event: the Monte Carlo Rally, a 2500-mile car race across Europe that began in 1911 and continues to this day. It is an event designed to showcase automobile innovation on a global stage. 1963 was a particularly important year since it marked the first entry of American-made vehicles into the race. A Ford driven by Bo Ljungfeldt finished in a respectable 42nd place out of 307 entrants. In the 1964 event, a Falcon finished second outright against some of the world’s best cars and drivers at that time. This film was produced by Wilding Productions for Ford Motor Company, who provided the Ford Falcon used in the rally.
The narrator explains the history of the event, how the race works, and offers viewers stunning views of the rally cars racing across France. He focuses on the American teams and cars, providing an American perspective on a European event. The film also contains footage of American actress and Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly, at the rally’s award ceremonies.
