It is often said that Shuai Jiao has “only“ 36 techniques, while other wrestling, such as Judo, have many more. There is a misconception at the base, if anything the opposite is true. In Chinese wrestling for thirty-six we do not mean techniques, but concepts. In this video, students of the master Li Bao Ru from Beijing show the single concept 别 子 Bie Zi, “to separate“ first performed with different footwork, then with different holds. And so it is clear that the same concept develops in many techniques, some very different from each other. The techniques thus become hundreds from thirty-six. Finally, some of Biezi’s counter-techniques are shown.
