Les Matelles, Charming Medieval Battlement in Occitanie France, Immersive Walking Tour 4K UHD
📌 Les Matelles on Google Maps:
The construction of the Battlements of Les Matelles dates back to 1425, but Les Matelles was already a capital since 1276, date of the foundation of “the Republic of Montferrand“ thanks to the charters and franchises granted by the Bishop of Maguelone, Count of Melgueil (Mauguio) and Montferrand.
The historic centre of the village of Les Matelles has retained its medieval appearance. Its entry into history is discreet and late. Indeed, the oldest known document is an extract from the Cartulaire de Maguelone dated from the twelfth century. There is mention of a church, which would prove the existence of a permanent community, but all in all modest, because the village bears neither the title of castrum (castle of an independent lordship) nor that of parrochia (parish).
Les Matelles bears the title of villa in 1266 and 1329 and mansus in 1309 and 1341 which would rather indicate an agricultural estate. In 1266 the Cartulaire reports that a toll was established at the Matelles.
Economic capital, Les Matelles were also: a royal letter of September 20, 1340 granted the inhabitants permission to hold a market on Thursday of each week and two fairs in the year.
During the Middle Ages, the village experienced three successive expansions, each of which was surrounded by walls. The first, built around a fortified house in the highest part around the eleventh century. The second built apparently in the thirteenth century, limited by the current Rue Droite. The third, which also extends southwards, was built from 1425.
Even today, the charm of the medieval village attracts many people. Just go to the medieval festival, organized every year on the first weekend of May by the Tourist Office of the Grand Pic Saint-Loup, to be convinced.
The name Les Matelles comes from the Occitan language: las Matèlas. The radical mata means tuft, bush, bouquet of trees (after André Boissier and Louis Alibert). The Coat of Arms of the Matelles “d’or à un M gothique de gueules, en chef de gueules chargé de trois croisettes d’argent“ appears in the Armorial du Royaume, made by Charles d’Hozier, dated August 27, 1700.
