Biography of Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall was born in Liozno, near Vitebsk, now in Belarus, on July 7 1887. In those days Vitebsk was a major cultural center. Chagall started studying painting with the local artist Yehuda Pen. Later Chagall founded a Vitebsk Museum of Modern Art and an Art School in Vitebsk. After he left Vitebsk Chagall lived in and Moscow. In 1923 moved to Paris and in 1937 he became a French citizen, but had to leave France during the Nazi occupation. He spent some time in Israel and died in France in 1985.
