We usually associate it with bogged down baggage trains and tank treads- but for the people who had to experience it on the ground, it was so much more. Mud was a terror. It was Hell. That doesn’t only apply to the First World War, either. While the trenches of Flanders are perhaps the most notorious example of this principle, it applied well to many other time periods as well, including the Napoleonic Era and the American Civil War. In this video, we’ll examine some of the many primary accounts from these time periods and more which go into detail on exactly how horrible that putrescent slime could become. ~~Sources & Further Reading On This Topic~~ ` The Ministry for History’s excellent video on the Siege of Sebastopol: ` “Mud in World War I“ Article: ` The voice recordings from WW1 Veterans in this video are found here: The following sources may all be found at as free PDFs - “A Soldier’s Experience, A Voice from the Ranks“ - “Mud and Khaki, Sketches from Flanders and France“ - “Recollections of an Officer of Napoleon’s Army“ - “What a Boy Saw in the Army“ - “With the British on the Somme“ - “Bullet and Shell“ You may also be interested in this book, not used for this video: ~~Other Links & Contact Info~~ You can directly support my work by becoming a Patron of this channel: ` You may also give a one-time tip here: ` If you’d like to support this channel without spending any money, you can watch my content early and get access to exclusive content at ! ` Find a free digital library, shop for merchandise, and learn more about this channel’s charity work at: ` Or, another great way to support my work is by booking me on Cameo! 50% of all these proceeds also go to charity: ` And of course you can follow me on Facebook and Instagram! ` ` ~~Timestamps~~ 00:00 Introduction 01:15 Mired in Mud 10:05 Sponsored Section 11:53 Drowned in Mud 26:12 Conclusion
