Fernando González Llort was part of the legendary Cuban espionage network “Wasp Network,“ which infiltrated terrorist networks in Miami in the 1990s, some of which had carried out explosive attacks on Cuba’s tourist infrastructure. After a conviction in the USA under highly questionable conditions, which had been criticized multiple times by the UN Human Rights Commission, he was released in 2014 and returned to Cuba. He is now the chairman of the Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) and recently visited Germany in that capacity. In an interview with Florian Warweg, he discussed his intelligence mission in the USA, the role of German solidarity with Cuba, the reasons for Washington’s ongoing obsession with the Caribbean island, the effects of the over 60-year-old US embargo, the prospects for a US withdrawal from the illegally occupied Guantanamo region, and geopolitical shifts. He also provided comprehensive and unvarnished insights into the reasons and impacts of the severe economic and social crisis currently being experienced in Cuba.
