Turkey’s Erdogan wins, becomes president for 3rd time
Sunday marked the victory of Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the country’s 2023 re-election, extending his authoritarian rule over the struggling country into not only a third term, but a third decade.
In his first comments since the polls closed, Erdoğan, 69, spoke to supporters on a campaign bus outside his home in Istanbul.
“I thank each member of our nation for entrusting me with the responsibility to govern this country once again for the upcoming five years,” he said.
“We said that we will win in a way that no one will lose. That’s why Turkey is the only winner today,” Erdoğan concluded in front of a roaring crowd.
