The name may come from the word “Corna” which in the local dialect, means rock/stone, as the little village is situated in a rocky area overhanging the Brembo river. You can reach the village by taking a mule track or a path which are parts of the VIA MERCATORUM, an ancient road used by Medieval merchant, to reach several points of interest and markets. In 1952 a new road, STRADA PRIULA, was built by the Venetian government in order to connect directly Bergamo city to the Valtellina, avoiding Spanish lands: as a result, the village was cut off all of the merchant traffic, and eventually lead to the closing of the studio which became barns and cellars. The Burg once was only named “Cornello”, then became “Cornello dei Tasso” thanks to the Tasso family which are the most important of the village itself.
