Concert: Deftones (1998) live at TMF Live | The Music Factory
Deftones is an American alternative metal band formed in Sacramento, California in 1988 by Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, and Abe Cunningham. They are known for their experimental sound, often compared to Radiohead but in a metal context. The band’s lineup solidified in 1993 with the additions of Chi Cheng and later Frank Delgado. Their debut album, “Adrenaline,“ released in 1995, laid the groundwork for their growing fanbase through extensive touring and word-of-mouth promotion.
Their follow-up album, “Around the Fur“ (1997), achieved chart success and RIAA certification. Deftones reached a new height with their third album, “White Pony“ (2000), which ventured into more experimental territories and earned them a Grammy Award, as well as platinum certification in the United States. Despite continued critical success, their subsequent albums, including the self-titled “Deftones“ (2003) and “Saturday Night Wrist“ (2006), faced challenges, including creative tensions and the tragic accident involving bassist Chi Cheng in 2008, leading to his eventual death in 2013.
Following Cheng’s accident, the band paused the production of the album “Eros“ and recruited Sergio Vega. They released “Diamond Eyes“ in 2010, continuing to explore experimental sounds with subsequent albums “Koi No Yokan“ (2012) and “Gore“ (2016). Their latest album, “Ohms“ (2020), was met with critical acclaim, noted for a return to their heavier roots. Deftones’ evolution over the decades showcases their ability to blend heavy metal with experimental music, maintaining a distinctive presence in the music industry.
