Clashes in Bangladesh Leave Dozens Dead and Injured as Protesters Demand PM Hasina’s Resignation
On Sunday, August 4, clashes in Bangladesh resulted in the deaths of at least a dozen people and left dozens more injured. Tens of thousands of protesters gathered to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Critics and human rights groups have accused the government of using excessive force to quell the movement, allegations which Hasina and her ministers deny. The unrest led to the shutdown of internet services and marks the government’s most significant challenge since the violent protests following Hasina’s fourth consecutive term win in January elections, which were boycotted by the main opposition party. Last month, student-led demonstrations against government job quotas resulted in at least 150 deaths, thousands of injuries, and about 10,000 arrests.
