Using a Softbox as Rim Lights to create an Eye Catching Image
In today’s Photo Deconstruction I break down how to create an iconic looking image using 2 lights and a softbox in an unusual way.
For this shoot my goal was to create something graphic, iconic and colorful. I love experimenting in the studio and found this technique to be something I try time and time again.
This image was created with only 2 strobes which at first glance can be a little confusing! One might guess 3, or even 4 lights.
To give the illusion of extra rim lights I’m using a softbox which when positioned close to the subject creates the bits of color that wrap around the subject.
The trick here is really using the flag in between the softbox and the model. Without the flag, you’d have a lot of light splashing back into the camera and a completely different look.
You could totally just stop here and have the model in silhouette, but for me, I wanted to play around a bit with complimentary colors and add a gel to the main light.
