Omsk is situated in southwestern Siberia at the confluence of the Irtysh and Om Rivers, and is 2,236 km (1,389 mi) from Moscow.
Originally established as a fort settlement in 1716 by Ivan Buchholz, a cossack, to protect the expanding Russian frontier along the Ishim and the Irtysh rivers against the Kyrgyz and Dzungar nomads of the Steppes.
Omsk became the seat of the Governor General of Western Siberia, and later of the Governor General of the Steppes. With the Revolution of 1917, the Soviet government relocated the administration centre to Novosibirsk. During the Great Patriotic War, a number of industries were evacuated to the city and by the end of the war had become a major industrial centre.......
