Thousands of Zapatistas protest over Ukraine war

(13 Mar 2022) Thousands of Zapatistas marched on Sunday in various Mexican cities to protest against Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. More than 5,000 Indigenous rebels of Mexico’s Zapatista movement from Yajalón, Palenque, Ocosingo, Las Margaritas, Altamirano marched peacefully through the streets of Cristobal de las Casas in the southern state of Chiapas, while another large group took to the streets in Mexico City. The Zapatistas led a brief armed uprising to demand greater Indigenous rights in 1994, and since then have remained in their “autonomous“ townships in the southern state of Chiapas, refusing government aid programs. Cries with messages such as, “no to war,“ Indigenous women and men women wearing ski masks distributed flyers and chanted, calling on Mexicans to organize against “the war of capitalism that kills and conquers the Ukrainian people for economic, political and ideological interests.“ In Mexico City, Otomi women, among others, marched through the capital with banners with anti-war messages and posters with white doves.
