Unfortunately for the rides of the 200, 100 and additionally the XL there was a section of approximately 4 miles of truly treacherous mud. Quickly rendering most bikes useless, with tires unable to roll due to mud and debris build up. With something that briefly resembled a cyclocross race riders forged through the UNBOUND battlefield and onward to their goal of 200 miles. After this demoralizing start riders were then treated to largely good road conditions barring a few stream crossings and hot and humid air as the sun beat down across the rolling hills of Emporia Kansas. Unfortunately for Pete Stetina the Unbound Gravel win still doesn’t have a check mark. Congratulations to Keegan Swenson your 2023 UNBOUND Gravel 200 winner.
