WASP aurantia spiders are commonly known as yellow garden spider, black and yellow garden spider, golden garden spider, zigzag spider, lightning spider, black and yellow wasp spider, corn spider, Steeler spider or McKinley spider. This species was first described by Hippolyte Lucas in 1833. It is predominant in the United States, Hawaii, southern Canada, Mexico, and Central America. It has characteristic yellow-black markings on its abdomen and a predominantly white cephalothorax. Its scientific Latin name translates as “gilded silver face“ (the genus name Argiope means “silver face“, and the specific epithet aurantia means “gilded“). Males range from 5-9 mm ( in); females range from 19–28 mm (– in). These spiders can bite if disturbed or disturbed, but the venom is harmless to non-allergic people, roughly equivalent to a bumblebee bite.
