The Battle of New Orleans On the morning of January 8, 1815, the Americans were attacked by the British just outside of the town of New Orleans. Behind their fortifications, the Americans opened fire on the exposed British regulars. Suffering heavy casualties, the British soon retreated. The Battle of New Orleans was the last battle of the War of 1812. The Battle of Shiloh On the morning of April 6, 1862, 40,000 Confederate soldiers poured out of the nearby woods and attacked the encamped Union soldiers. The overpowering Confederate attack drove the unprepared Union soldiers from their camps and threatened to overwhelm the entire Union Army of Tennessee. By afternoon the Union had regrouped and formed a battle line, known as the “Hornet’s Nest.” Repeated Confederate attacks could not break through this line.
