Do tonearms affect turntables “sound“? We tried finding out playing two complete different models from Schiller Phono sound lab. One is a carbon type with a unique rubber bearing for vertical action and copper wiring, the other is based on a “upside down“ hanging one point bearing in combination with a brass-alloy armwand, damped by a wooden inlay. Wireing is solid core silver. Both tonearms are equipped with a AT 95 E modified by Schiller Phono. Cantilevers are stiffened by triangulation, generators are mounted into a wooden housing. In spite of simple recording by a stereo mic in the middle of the room and the digital losses also, the differences are clearly audible when using a good head phone. But which is the “better“ one?
