Ein neues Lied wir heben an (Luthers first song)

Original German text with English textoverlay, providing the necessary context and background. ’Ein neues Lied wir heben an’ is probably the first song Luther composed (text and melody). It’s a ballad telling the story of two monks from the Antwerp Augustinian monastery, Johan van (den) Essen and Hendrik Voes, who were burnt at the stake 1 July 1523. Apparently, the strong emotion Luther felt hearing of their death, triggered his poetical output. 0:50 first stanza 1:42 second 2:33 third 3:22 instrumental (c.f. gamba, two recorders) 4:13 eigth 5:03 final Willem Ceuleers (vocal, recorder and musical arrangements, ), Aline Hopchet (recorder) and Piet Van Steenbergen (gamba).
