Check out the new version: AC Joint Sprain The acromioclavicular joint (AC Joint) is found at the top of the shoulder and forms the junction between the acromion on the scapula (shoulder blade) and the clavicle (collar bone). This joint forms the highest point of the shoulder. The AC joint functions to allow the individual to raise their arm above their head. There are three ligaments which join the two bones and form the AC Joint. Straining any of these ligaments can cause pain in the shoulder. Most of the time strain to these ligaments occurs due to a dislocation or separation. These injuries happen most often in contact sports during a collision, a fall on the tip of the shoulder, or a fall on an outstretched arm.
