Amy Beach - Romance for violin and piano Op. 23 (audio + sheet music)
Performance by: Midori Goto, accompanied by Robert McDonald
The 1893 Columbian Exposition was the first World’s Fair to include a venue featuring women’s accomplishments. Pianist/composer Amy Beach and violinist Maud Powell were both active participants in the Exposition; both presented papers. Powell performed a number of times, and Beach was commissioned to write a work for the occasion. In addition, they collaborated to premiere Beach’s Romance, Op. 23, written for and dedicated to Powell. The first performance was so successful that the audience demanded a repetition. Those present were enthralled when the music fell from the music stand, and Powell finished the performance from memory.
