In this video I present a drum transcription of the first 32 bars of the song “Thing’s Ain’t What They Used To Be “ composed by Mercer Ellington from the album “Down Hom Reunion“ by Young Men From Memohis, released 1959, recorded in New York City in the Olmsted Sound Studios on April 15, 1959. Drummer was Charles Crosby. Crosby’s drumming style is characterized by precision, groove and a tasteful use of dynamics. Crosby’s musical career began in his home town of Memphis, where he gained his first experience with none other than B. B. King. B. King. Crosby later founded his own bands in Columbus and played with artists such as Chuz Alfred and Roland Kirk.
