How to care for Shetland Ponies in frosty weather: Tv Episode 472
In this week’s video we find out how to care for Shetland Ponies in frosty weather.
Furry ponies
Our ponies have a double layered furry coat which keeps them nice and warm in the winter. Can you see which two ponies are named in the video?
Icy grass
The frosty weather can cause problems in the morning when the ponies eat the icy grass. When the sun comes up the frost melts away and the grass becomes very sugary which can be bad for ponies. It can cause something called frost induced laminitis which makes their feet sore.
What to do on frosty mornings
At Shetland Pony Club, our ponies live out in the field so when there is frosty weather we get up early and feed them hay so they don’t eat the sugary grass.
