meaning of the song
The beginning of Namjoonâs verse mentions how these days he hears the word a lot and is now confused as to what the intentions behind the words are. As it is admiration for someone elicited by achievements, Namjoon shows his worries in terms of how generally you would assume respect is for superior people, alluding to the fact that people now consider them superior.
He also says âre-spectâ as in âre = to do againâ and the term âspectâ associated with image producing machinery in science, so essentially something that âlooksâ. Which is why with the line, â Re-spect means as it sounds, to literally look again and again â, he begins to express his fear that the more respect and admiration they get, the more people will look at them, and thus the more people can find their flaws. Namjoon then proceeds to say, that even though you (ARMYs) see our (BTS) flaws, you still keep looking at us because you need that perfect role model to look up to, so I can easily say no matter how heavy of a word it is I wish one day I can truly say ârespectâ and mean it towards both BTS and ARMY.
The refrain of the song is quite straightforward.
Please donât say respect easily, yeah
Because even I am not sure, yeah
Sometimes Iâm scared of myself
What if the weak me is found out
And so is the chorus which again mentions themes similar to Namjoons rap.
(Respect) Everybody says it so easily
(Respect) Though you donât know what it is
(Respect) Please take a look again
(Respect) One time
(Respect) Two times
(Respect) I wonât say it easily
(Respect) Even if I donât know well now
(Respect) One day Iâll say it
(Respect) One time
(Respect) Oh yeah
Yoongiâs rap on the other hand focuses on false respect, as in people who will say they respect you but talk bad behind your back, which is something BTS has faced quite a lot apart from the people who talked bad about them straight to their faces. Essentially he is criticizing all the people that do this and the fact that this is the meaning society has made for respect today regardless of the initial intention of the word.
The second refrain just mentions the words and phrases usually heard along with âI respect youâ, followed by the chorus again and then lastly a dialogue between Namjoon and Yoongi in satoori (dialect) which again is quite straightforward.
Y: Aye, do ya know what respect is? N: I donât know, hyungnim, Y: I donât know either,
N: Why is respect this hard?
Y: Respect N: Well, is to look again, I donât know,
Y: Respect N: What?
Y: Respect!
N: Admiration!
Y: I think those are respect, Iâd come to think of that,
N: English is hard, Y: I know right?
