Poland: After the floods | European Journal

The floodwaters are receding, but the situation remains tense in parts of Poland. Authorities fear disease outbreaks in stricken pets and farm animals drowned during the flooding. Their carcasses now pose a threat to water supplies and wells. Teams of doctors, veterinarians and construction experts are now surveying the damage. The material cost is estimated in the billions of euros. Many Poles are asking why more wasn’t done to protect the countryside after the disastrous 1997 floods.
