Mime intends to make Siegfried his instrument to conquer the Ring, which ensures absolute power. But Siegfried thwarted his plans and reforged “Nothung“, his father’s sword, with which he managed to overcome all obstacles. He kills the dragon Fafner and seizes the Ring over which the latter was watching. Siegfried defies the god Wotan and conquers his daughter, Brünnhilde, the Valkyrie sleeping on a rock surrounded by impassable flames. The scene in which the Traveler is defeated by Siegfried constitutes one of the key moments of the Tetralogy: the emergence of a new hero on a human scale as the culmination of the Siegfried opera, while the process leading to the Twilight of the Gods is definitively set in motion. As Siegfried’s adversaries rise up against him, he gains in power and unknowingly fulfills the prophecies about him. The last words that Wagner writes in Siegfried and which announce the action of Twilight of the Gods (fall of Walhalla and the Gods, but also the story of the Norns) are thus entrusted to Brünnhilde, and not to Siegfried, which shows that it is through the union of these two human entities that the just return of things and the salvation of the world will take place..
