It was formed on year 90’s whose fame in music scene took place somewhere in 2000’s. In spite of changes, South Border was able to retain the uniqueness of their sound and musical sensibility. Because of its uniqueness, the band is considered as the first Asian artist with real international potential. They were simply one of the best live performers of the country. Jay Durias, musical director and lead creative genius kept the band and its music alive and booming. The band came from far-away Cebu down south where the name of the band was derived. They were originally composed of Jay Durias, Tata Balane, Butch Victoriano, Ric Junasa and Brix Ferraris. They entered national music scene on the launching of their first album South Border on 1996 under the label, Sony BMG Records. Its song “May Pag-ibig Pa Kaya“ was included in the Metro Manila Pop Music Festival and another song “Kahit Kailan“ is an award-winning hit. The album reached Gold to Platinum status the other year. At the end of 1997, the band became a certified star when their debut album reached to triple platinum status. South Border’s first major concert was held at the big dome, Araneta Coliseum. The big dome was filled to the brim with thousands of their new-found fans. They grabbed most of the trophies in 10th Awit Awards on 1997. Not long after, Brix Ferraris left the band and was replaced by Luke Mejares. But instead of being discouraged, the band of new line-up double their efforts and finished their sophomore album entitled Bump! under Sony BMG Records. The album featured “Sa ’Yo“ and “Reborn“, the first attempt of the band in recording an instrumental piece reminiscent of their early jazz influence. On 1999, South Border once again was put to recognition as they went and bagged 12 Katha Music Awards. On 2000, a song, “Habang Atin Ang Gabi“ hit a great success on waves. La Vida Rosa, movie of Rosanna Roces and Diether Ocampo used “Habang Atin Ang Gabi“ as its theme song. The song was written by Armando Lao and the music by Jay Durias, who regarded it as one of his best composition. The third album of the band entitled South Border the Live Album was released under Sony BMG Records. On 2001, their fourth album The Way We Do was released under the same label. At the quarter of 2002, Luke Mejares announced to leave the band and pursue a solo career. Looking for his replacement is yet another difficult task to do. But his departure was replaced by two vocalists. Vince Alaras is 26 years old from La Salle’s Kundirana and Duncan Ramos was a child prodigy who often accompanied Gary Valenciano in his shows and tours. Both new members can dance as well as they sang. They brought new and youthful spirit on the band and the songs they composed. One of their biggest hits is “Rainbow“ which was promoted on the Metro Manila Film Festival entry by Sharon Cuneta in Crying Ladies. Another song “Ikaw Nga“, the theme song of Mulawin, GMA’s phenomenal fantasy TV series dominated the television. On 2004, the band released its sixth album but the first album under independent label. The album was entitled Episode III featuring two songs of gigantic commercial success, “The Show“ and “Brown Hand Smash“. The songs gave the band an edgier, danceable R&B sound. On August 2007, the two vocalist, Duncan and Vince left the band and was reported to pursue solo career like Luke. Jay Durias took the responsibility of the left vocals. But on 2008, the band began start working with Pido, their new guitarist.
