In case the context and symbolism isn’t clear, we’re going back in time as Stan’s birthday candles become less and less, Kyle leaving his house as a kid but also leaving him and his hometown behind when they got older, metaphorically taking the light/joy out of Stan’s life. What you can’t really tell is that Kyle sent Stan the very last cake on his 21st birthday which results in him having all these childhood flashbacks, the candle in the beginning being the single candle on that cake.
