#Avignon, located in the southeast of #France, has been known since the 6th-5th centuries BC. Later, representatives of the Gallic tribes settled here. Avignon experienced its greatest heyday in the XIV-XV centuries, when in 1305, as a result of intrigue and struggle for the papal throne, part of the papal court headed by Clement V moved to Avignon. Avignon has a huge number of attractions - impressive even by French standards. Among the main ones worth visiting are the famous monumental Papal Palace, the picturesque arches of the Saint-Bénézet, remains of the Roman Forum at Place de l’Horloge, Cathedral of Our Lady of Doms.
