Captain Edward J Smith perished when the ship he commanded, the RMS Titanic, sank in the early hours of 15th April 1912. The circumstances of his death are unknown and there are conflicting reports about how he died the night of the sinking. His body was never recovered.
This scene is from the James Cameron film Titanic (1997) in which he was shown to resign to the ships wheelhouse and await his imminent death as the ship took it’s final plunge into the icy North Atlantic Ocean.
