► Story Behind the Song:
Since first hearing this tune in the movie, Shrek, I have loved this melody, and when Leonard Cohen passed away in 2016, I decided it was time to arrange it. One of the challenges was understanding what exactly Cohen was trying to say about “Hallelujah“, and I found this helpful quote from an online article: “The word ‘hallelujah,’ the song teaches us, is a refrain worthy of times of celebration, of mourning, of regret, of catharsis, and reconciliation.“
As a Christian, this description resonates with me. To say “Hallelujah“ literally means God be praised“ - it is an exclamation of rejoice, yet, we often rejoice only in our joys. Cohen, it seems, was trying to remind us to rejoice in all things, even in our suffering. For me, the ultimate example of this is Jesus Christ, who laid his life down and suffered an unbearable death for the salvation of mankind, yet rejoiced in his suffering. Therefore, I can think of no better time to publish this video than on Easter Weekend. To those who suffer, may this video be a reminder that there can be great purpose in suffering. Never give up hope.
Hallelujah,
Jonny
