Introducing Nia Smith | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2025
You know a cover song is great when fans are clamoring to hear some original music next. That’s exactly what happened when Nia Smith started posting reimaginations of her favorite songs onto TikTok. She’d echo SZA on the tube, and pluck Miguel in her bedroom. Particularly striking (and viral) were her takes on Adele and Amy Winehouse classics, the Brixton-born singer’s timbre being gloriously similar to those of the iconic vocalists. Under the trove of online videos that document Nia’s rise from classroom jams, to open mics, to increasingly larger stages, are comments pleading for her to get in the studio and drop her own stuff. After all, that is the rightful trajectory for an artist who has had self-described “tunnel vision” on a music career since her childhood. This May, fans’ hopes were fulfilled in the form of “Give Up The Fear.” Tangy boom-bap drums and somber piano score the track, released by famed Brit label Polydor. Its overall sparseness clears the room for the main instrument: Nia’s rich and affectionate voice. The following dancehall-inflected “Personal,” on the other hand, announced her ability to seamlessly slink into new sounds and flex her sharp pen. Though Nia only has one EP to her name, Team Vevo has seen enough to extend the invite for Artists To Watch 2025. When we asked her what she wants in 2025, her ambition continued to shine bright in her answer: “More of this, times 10.”
