Alexi Laiho playing jazz standard “Take Five“

Kimberly Goss: The Sinergy guys often noodled around on their instruments while waiting for the sound engineer to give us the green light to run through a couple songs during soundcheck. I have many clips of them jamming Ozzy/Priest, etc., but I find this one much more interesting because it showcases Alexi’s diversity as both a musician and a lover of all good music, regardless of genre. Being open-minded to all styles of music (while maintaining a “metal” exterior 😉) was one of the biggest things we shared in common when we met as teenagers back in 1997. Our eclectic musical bond would continue on through his final days. As I look back on our texts during the last 6 months of his life, the one constant theme is how often we’d share music with each other via YouTube links. A typical message was, “omg, remember this tune?” followed by a funny memory or silly inside joke we had related to the song. Some examples of what we’d send included music by John Lee Hooker, Guns N’ Roses, Prince, Journey, King Diamond, Bomfunk MC’s, The Ramones, Manowar, ., Beth Hart, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Huey Lewis and the News, etc. Quite the variety (you might have to google one or two of them 😂). I’m guessing every music fan has at least a hundred “all-time favorite“ bands/artists (I know I definitely do). Many of Alexi’s were probably widely known among his fans, but he also liked some stuff that people wouldn’t expect! I think that’s one of the key ingredients to being a truly well-rounded musician, which he most certainly was. Although he left his mark on the world of metal, I think you can absolutely hear the diverse influences he absorbed across many genres. #alexilaiho #happybirthday #takefive #jazz #guitarist #soundcheck #sinergy #metal
