Ab-Soul - Do Better - Live Session | Vevo Ctrl For more than a decade, Ab-Soul has been the dean of West Coast rap’s philosophy department. The four albums he released throughout the 10s on Top Dawg - ‘Longterm Mentality,’ ‘Control System,’ ‘These Days…,’ and ‘Do What Thou Wilt.,’ - are collections of essays on life, love, spirituality, cultural history, and personal memoirs of life growing in Carson, California. Ab’s lyrical lectures have also been a place where fans got to know fellow TDE standouts like Kendrick Lamar (on 2011’s “Constipation” among many others) and SZA (on “God Reigns,” the epic starter for ’These Days’). He’s also credited with forming Black Hippy, the quicksilver group composed of K Dot, Schoolboy Q, and Jay Rock that arose out of a recognized need to to push each other’s artistry. As the loc’d out rhymer has spit many times: “It’s all about love.” Self love falls under that umbrella, too, and “Do Better” tackles the subject head on. Grabbing some Nick Hakim bars and having Zacari re-sing them, it’s a quintessentially laidback Ab track. Get ya pencils out, class is in session.
