“Sunday, 10 September The 15th stage of the Vuelta is a 158.6 kilometre mountain stage with a sprint finish. After the double climb to Puerto de Zuarrarrate, the last 8.5 kilometres are downhill to the finish line in Lekunberri. The start and finish are the same as in the 2020 Vuelta, the edition that was held without spectators. Back then, Marc Soler attacked on the descent of the last climb, the Alto San Miguel de Aralar. The Catalan left a nine-man leading group behind him and rode solo to victory. Primoz Roglic sprinted to second place 19 seconds later. The Alto San Miguel de Aralar was replaced by a double climb to Puerto de Zuarrarrate this time. This one is much easier. While the climb to the Sanctuary of San Miguel de Aralar has an average gradient of 7.9% over 9.4 kilometres, the Zuarrarrate has 7.3 kilometres with 4.8%. It is part of a final course of over 30 kilometres, which the riders ride through one and a half times. The route to Puerto de Zuarrarrate is also rarely flat. Many climbs are not categorised, but the Puerto de Lizarragga is. It is a 19.3 kilometre climb with a 2.7% gradient and an almost flat section of about eight kilometres halfway up. So the rest is much steeper than the average would suggest (without it immediately becoming the Angliru). 45 kilometres before the finish, the riders turn into the last circuit and have the Zuarrarrate right in front of their wheels. This gives them an immediate taste of the finale. As already mentioned, it is a 7.3 kilometre climb with a 4.8% gradient, which flattens out considerably in the last 1.3 kilometres.
