S. Korea adopts global standard age system starting June 28th
오늘 부터 최대 두 살 어려 만 나이 통일법 시행 배경
Starting today, all South Koreans become younger --at least one year or even two years for some people, with the country now adopting the global standard age system.
Our Kim Jung-sil reports.
In South Korea, it is often customary to ask someone their age even if you are meeting them for the first time.
And if the other person is older, you suddenly treat them with more respect.
Just minutes into the conversation, a hierarchy has set in.
“There’s something called the Three Fundamental Bonds and Five Constant Virtues in Confucianism, and this has led South Korea to have a culture that differentiates people by age, and respects someone if they are older.“
And the peculiar, one-of-a-kind, Korean age system added more confusion to a society that already heavily cared about a person’s age.
