Thunder in Paradise Interactive (CD-I) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A beginning to end playthrough of Phllips’ 1995 CD-I game, Thunder in Paradise Interactive. The video was recorded off of a DVS VE200 model CD-I console (dated 1998, built-in digital video cart). Played with a Philips’ brand mouse, it’s far more accurate than the gun (that’s not cheating, right?)
I’m still overwhelmed by the realization that a FMV light-gun shooter staring Hulk Hogan and that kid from Step-By-Step riding in the boat version of Knight Rider actually exists. More than being just based on a show that lasted one whole season in the mid-90’s (!), the game had the honor of having the final two episodes of Thunder in Paradise being written expressly with it in mind. As a result, it featured more footage than the TV-aired versions’ re-edits, and is one of the few, if not the only, game to ever have its parent TV series’ format cater to its game adaptations.
Thunder in Paradise plays a lot like the American LaserGames’ games where the game freezes right before the guy swaggers out wearing some ridiculous costume, but with pieces of a Thunder in Paradise episode interspersed between the action sequences that look shockingly high budget for the time. The acting is atrocious, the story-line doesn’t make one iota of sense, the insipid theme song is spitefully catchy, but the game keeps everything a brand of light and endlessly entertaining that’s only possible when people mercilessly chew the scenery.
Those aren’t meant as criticisms - honest! FMV games that take themselves too seriously usually embarrass themselves in an amusingly ironic way, and this one in no way suffers from that problem. The action sequences are pretty cool, since the enemies appear in difference places whenever you play (they are overlays on top of the video). The controls are great with the gun and the mouse (not so much the remote), and the video is nearly DVD quality, given that the game require the DVC to play.
It’s hideously awesome. I hope it’s as fun to watch as it is to play!
