A reading for meditation of the famous text on lojong practice, meaning to ;transform the mind’, by Geshe Langri Tangpa. The first seven verses of the Eight Verses for Training the Mind deal with the practices associated with cultivating the method aspect of the path such as compassion, altruism, aspiration to attain Buddhahood, and so on. The eighth verse deals with the practices that are directed toward cultivating the wisdom aspect of the path, and seeing into the Ultimate Truth of Emptiness. Geshe Langri Tangpa (1054-1123 ) was a famous Kadampa master and disciple of Potowa Rinchen Sal, who is best known for composing the Eight Verses of Training the Mind. KyabjΓ© Trulshik Rinpoche says: β€œAmong the Kadampa masters, there was one called Geshe Langri Thangpa, who was an incredible teacher and a really great master. He is said to have set the standard for meditation on the defects of samsara. In fact, he was even known as β€˜Langthangpa Gloomy Face,’ because he never ever smiled. Except, that is, on one occasion when a mouse tried to move a piece of turquoise on his mandala plate. The mouse was trying desperately to push the turquoise but could not manage, so he called over another mouse to come and help him and together they tried to move it. That made Langri Thangpa smile, it is said, but apart from that, he had a permanently gloomy expression, and so people used to call him β€œgloomy face.” Once, it is said, his attendant told him how people were calling him β€œgloomy face” because he never smiled, and he replied, β€œWhen I think about all the endless suffering in the different realms of samsara, how could I ever possibly smile?” (Rigpawiki) The text can be found here: Music: Macroform - β€œSolaceβ€œ - _______________________________________ πŸ™ May whatever goodness arises from these readings/offerings be for the benefit of all sentient beings. πŸ”† Thank you to everyone who has written to inquire about offering a donation to express appreciation for this channel.
