Hanja is the Korean name for a traditional writing system consisting mainly of Traditional Chinese characters that was incorporated and used since the Gojoseon period (400 BCE). According to the Standard Korean Language Dictionary out of the approximately 510,000 words in the Korean Language, 290,000 words (57%) were Hanja. Hanja in Korean is like a ’word root’. If you know Hanja, you can not only guess a meaning of new words you have never seen before, but you can also remember them well. The total number of basic Hanja is approximately 1800.
