The Real East Germany - Snapshots of Life Behind the Iron Curtain During Peaceful Revolution (1989)

Between 20 and 21 October 1989, less than three weeks before the fall of the Berlin Wall, ITN’s cameras captured footage of daily life in East Germany (Ostdeutschland), officially known as the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik; DDR). As well as capturing mass pro-democracy demonstrations in East Berlin, ITN’s cameras ventured out of the capital to film in the nearby city of Leipzig and the town of Wittenburg, where the newly-established pro-democracy party Neues Forum (New Forum) was gathering attention and supporters. Tentatively by day and with strength in numbers by night, the people of East Germany were exploiting a newly-acquired freedom of expression which would soon bring down the Berlin Wall and the Communist state that built it. #Berlin #EastBerlin #EastGermany #DDR #GDR #BerlinWall #Ostdeutschland #DeutscheDemokratischeRepublik #ColdWar #Communism #Communist #Democracy #USSR #SovietUnion #Soviet #SovietWave #Germany #Leipzig #NewForum #IronCurtain #Protest To license the footage featured in this clip, follow the link below: R211089001*&sort=oldest&license=rf,rr To search the ITN Archive collection on Getty Images, follow the link below: 🎥 Subscribe to our YouTube channel (tap the bell icon and stay up to date with all the latest ITN Archive videos!) - @ITNArchive 🎥 Follow us on Twitter - 🎥 Like us on Facebook - 🎥 Check out our TikTok - @itnarchive1955
